Last week, the House:

  • Passed H.R. 7511 (the Laken Riley Act) – this bill requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to take into custody aliens who have been charged with, arrested for, or convicted of theft offenses, as Laken Riley’s alleged killer was. This legislation mandates that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detain such aliens until they can be removed from the country.                   
  • Passed H.R. 2799 (Expanding Access to Capital Act of 2023) - this bill is composed of 19 bills that make reforms to the U.S. capital markets to strengthen public markets and make them more attractive, help small businesses and entrepreneurs raise capital, and increase access to private markets for everyday investors.
  • Passed H.R. 3821 (Firefighter Cancer Registry Reauthorization Act of 2023) – this bill reauthorizes the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer for five years at currently appropriated levels.
