Congressman Jake Ellzey Commends the Signing of the Laken Riley Act into Law to Protect American Communities
January 29, 2025
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jake Ellzey proudly voted in favor of S. 5, the Laken Riley Act, which will protect American communities from criminal illegal immigrants. This legislation requires Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to issue detainers and take custody of illegal aliens who commit serious crimes, including theft, assault on law enforcement officers, and crimes resulting in death or serious bodily injury.
“The tragic death of Laken Riley is a reminder of why we must enforce our immigration laws,” said Ellzey. “This legislation ensures that criminal illegal aliens are held accountable and that our communities are protected. The federal government has a responsibility to ensure that dangerous individuals are not allowed to walk free.”
The bill strengthens immigration enforcement by mandating ICE detain individuals charged with, convicted of, or arrested for serious crimes such as theft, assault of a law enforcement officer, and crimes that result in death or serious bodily injury. Additionally, it provides states with the legal standing to take action against the federal government for failing to enforce these laws.
“With the passing of the Laken Riley Act, Congress is sending a clear message: we will not allow criminal illegal aliens to threaten our safety,” Ellzey continued. “And we are taking action to protect our families and communities. This legislation is an important step in securing America’s future and protecting our people. I am proud to see it now become law.”
